India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE) has surged to the fourth spot among global stock exchanges by IPO fundraising in the first half of 2025, attracting a total of $5.51 billion—roughly 8.9% of worldwide IPO capital in that period.
That success puts the NSE just behind the likes of the Nasdaq Global Market, the New York Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq Global Select—marking a significant leap in India’s presence on the international capital markets stage.

What’s Fuelled This Remarkable Rise?

1. Surge in Domestic Listings
A broad mix of companies—from fast-moving SMEs to blue-chip giants—have taken to the public markets this year through the NSE. In H1 2025, the exchange processed 119 IPOs, raising the equivalent of about ₹51,150 crore (~$6.6 billion). That’s a healthy jump compared to last year’s figures under ₹38,000 crore.

2. Home Market Investors Take the Lead
Domestic mutual funds, high-net-worth individuals, and retail investors stepped in when foreign flows remained cautious. This surge in local interest has lifted both sentiment and subscription levels for new share issues.

3. Block Deals and Anchor Support
A series of well‑backed block deals and anchor placements cemented confidence early on. Institutional involvement acted as a stabiliser, smoothing the way for many successful listings.

Why This Shift Matters

  • Deeper & More Liquid Markets: With more IPOs and higher fundraising, Indian markets are showing enhanced liquidity and variety—significant for investors seeking diversification.
  • Global Respect & Recognition: Ranking fourth globally shines a spotlight on NSE’s robust framework, potentially luring international issuers to consider India as their listing destination.
  • A Boost for Entrepreneurs: As the NSE continues to prove its mettle, startups and mid-sized businesses will feel more confident about seeking public capital—especially beyond big urban centres.

What Lies Ahead in H2 2025?

If H1 is a harbinger, H2 could see even more vigorous activity. A pipeline of forthcoming IPOs, retail enthusiasm, and sustained mutual fund participation are sound indicators. However, economic uncertainties and global trends remain key wild cards.
Once again, India is rewriting its financial script. The NSE, with its $5.51 billion haul in H1 2025, has firmly announced itself on the global capital-raising map. A decade ago, few would’ve imagined the NSE competing neck‑and‑neck with Wall Street or Nasdaq. Now, investors and entrepreneurs alike are watching keenly as India’s public markets assert their maturity and global relevance.
