Indian investors and traders are informed that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed on Thursday, May 1, 2025, for Maharashtra Day. This annual holiday celebrates the formation of the Maharashtra state in 1960 and has been declared a trading holiday by both exchanges located in Mumbai.

Full Market Closure Across Segments

On the calendars instituted by the respective exchanges' officials, all trading activities, including equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, interest-rate derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB), will be off for that day.

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will also be partially closed. Trading will be closed for the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and will open for the evening session between 5:00 PM and 11:30 PM.

Trading Resumes on May 2

Normal trading operations on the NSE and BSE will recommence on Friday, May 2, 2025. The pre-opening session will begin at 9:00 AM, followed by the regular trading session starting at 9:15 AM.

Maharashtra Day: A Brief Overview

Maharashtra Day celebrates the birth of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960. The bifurcation of the bilingual Bombay state into two separate states created the state—Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people. The day's celebrations include various events such as parades, cultural programmes, and more, particularly in the state capital, Mumbai.

The closure on May 1 also coincides with International Labour Day, a global observance honouring workers' contributions. While Labour Day is internationally recognised, the primary reason for the stock market holiday in India on this date is Maharashtra Day, due to the exchange's location in Mumbai.

Upcoming Market Holidays

The next scheduled stock market holiday following Maharashtra Day will occur on Friday, August 15, 2025, on account of Independence Day. Investors are advised to refer to the official holiday calendars of NSE and BSE in order to obtain the full list of trading holidays for 2025.
