How to Sell IPO Shares at the Share Market?
Last Updated: 15th December 2025 - 11:41 am
Selling IPO shares feels simple on paper, yet the moment the stock lists, most people find themselves hesitating.
It’s normal, the price jumps around, the market feels unpredictable, and you’re trying to make the “right” move without overthinking it. Still, once you understand the usual flow of how to sell IPO shares, the whole thing becomes much less intimidating.
The first thing you need to do is just check your Demat account and confirm the allotment is visible. It sounds basic, but if you’ve never sold shares before, this single step makes everything clearer. Once the shares appear, the rest is largely routine. Your trading platform will show the stock as soon as it gets listed, and from there, it works like any other equity sale.
Most investors start by deciding whether they want to sell immediately or wait a little. Selling shares after IPO listing can feel like a guessing game, especially when the price moves quickly in the first few minutes. Some people like taking whatever profit shows up on listing, while others prefer letting the stock settle before making a call. There’s no universal rule, it really depends on what sort of investor you are and how comfortable you feel with early volatility.
Once you are prepared, the practical measures to sell allotted IPO shares become very easy. You go to your trading app, look for the newly listed company, and pick the sell option. A limit order allows you to have more control, especially when the price fluctuates a lot. A market order is faster, but it might get executed at a price a little different from what you anticipated. Nonetheless, the platform will notify you of the order and display its status so that you are aware of whether or not it was completed.
Once the trade is completed, the funds settle into your account following the standard timing. It’s usually smooth, and after one or two tries, you’ll find the entire process feels surprisingly seamless.
