The Indian stock market benchmarks managed to bounce back from their early losses on Monday, April 6, as the Sensex gained 662.98 points, or 0.9%, to reach 73,982.52, while the Nifty added 208.65 points, or 0.92%, to reach 22,921
Earlier in the session, markets had opened lower, with the Sensex drops 590.89 points or 0.8% to 72,728.66 and the Nifty declining 170.15 points or 0.74% to 22,542.95.
Market breadth turned positive, with 2,846 stocks advancing, 1,094 declining, and 161 remaining unchanged.
Ceasefire Proposal Between U.S. And Iran Supports Sentiment
A proposed framework to end hostilities between Iran and the U.S. supported market sentiment, according to a Reuters report. The proposal includes an immediate ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
The report stated that the framework has been shared with both countries, outlining steps toward de-escalation.
Rupee Strengthens During Session
The Indian rupee appreciated 33 paise to 92.85 against the U.S. dollar during the session, after opening at 93.13, according to interbank foreign exchange data.
Banking, IT Stocks Lead Gains
Banking stocks saw strong buying during the session, with the Nifty Bank and Nifty PSU Bank indices rising up to 2%. Stocks of Bank of Maharashtra rallied 4.2%, those of Bank of India increased by 4.1%, and those of Bank of Baroda rallied 3.5%.
Banks' quarterly results revealed that growth in advances was continuing, making investors more enthusiastic about the banking sector. The IT sector was also positive with gains of up to 1%.
Broader Markets And Sectoral Trends
Most sectoral indices on the Nifty registered gains, barring the pharma and oil & gas counters. In addition, broad markets also saw an uptick, with the Nifty Midcap100 Index and Nifty Smallcap100 Index registering gains of more than 1%.
In terms of Nifty50 companies, Trent, Titan, and Adani Enterprises posted gains of up to 7%, whereas Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and JSW Steel lost up to 2%.
The rally witnessed by benchmark indices can be attributed to sector-specific gains triggered by external factors, foreign exchange, and individual stocks.
