NIFTY Financial Services – Overview

The Nifty Financial Services Index, commonly called FINNIFTY, tracks selected companies from India's financial services sector, currently comprising 20 constituents. Its constituents cover areas such as banking, financial services, insurance and housing finance. The index was launched by NSE in January 2021 to represent the performance of companies across this broader financial services segment.

FINNIFTY uses a free-float market capitalisation-based method. This means the index gives weight to the market value of shares available for public trading. At the time of rebalancing, the weight of an individual stock is capped at 33%, while the combined weight of the top three stocks is capped at 62%.

The index is reviewed periodically, allowing its constituents and weights to reflect changes in the eligible financial services universe.

How is FINNIFTY Calculated?

The value of FINNIFTY is based on the free-float market capitalisation of its constituents. In simple terms, the calculation considers the market value of shares available to public investors rather than the entire shareholding of each company.

The index methodology also applies stock-level and combined weight limits. A single constituent can have a maximum weight of 33%, while the top three constituents together can account for a maximum of 62% at rebalancing.

These limits help maintain a defined distribution of weights across the index.

FINNIFTY Scrip Selection Criteria

Companies need to meet specific eligibility requirements to be considered for inclusion in FINNIFTY. Key criteria include:

  • The stock must form part of the eligible Nifty 500 universe.
  • The company should belong to an eligible financial services segment.
  • Preference is given to companies available in NSE's F&O segment.
  • The company must meet the prescribed free-float market capitalisation requirement.
  • Constituents are selected based on the index methodology and relevant sector representation.
  • Individual stock weight is subject to the prescribed 33% cap.
  • The combined weight of the top three stocks is subject to the 62% cap.

These conditions help determine which companies qualify for the index.

FINNIFTY vs BANK NIFTY – Key Differences

FINNIFTY and Bank Nifty both cover the financial sector, but their constituent universe differs. FINNIFTY includes companies from a wider range of financial services, whereas Bank Nifty focuses on banking stocks.

The two indices can therefore respond differently to developments affecting banks and other financial services businesses.

FINNIFTY Futures & Options – Why Traders Watch This Index

FINNIFTY also has a derivatives market, allowing eligible market participants to access futures and options linked to the index. NSE introduced futures and options contracts on the Nifty Financial Services Index (FINNIFTY) in January 2021, with the launch including weekly and monthly contracts.

This makes the index relevant for users who study financial-sector derivatives. The FINNIFTY option chain provides information about available option contracts, including strikes and premiums, while FINNIFTY futures provide access to index futures contracts.

Users should understand contract specifications, expiry dates, margin requirements and applicable risks before considering derivatives.

Key Factors That Move FINNIFTY

Several financial and economic factors can influence the companies represented in FINNIFTY.

RBI Monetary Policy

Changes in interest rates and monetary policy can affect borrowing costs, credit demand and the operations of financial institutions.

Bank, NBFC and Insurer Earnings

Quarterly results can influence individual constituents and, in turn, affect the index. Investors often review revenue, profit, asset quality, loan growth and other company-specific measures.

Credit Growth

Changes in credit growth can provide information about lending activity across banks and financial institutions. Stronger or slower credit demand can influence expectations around financial-sector performance.

FII and DII Flows

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) can influence demand for financial-sector stocks through their investment activity.

These factors can affect different FINNIFTY constituents in different ways, so the index movement may reflect several developments at the same time.
