Gold has become a strategic investment plan for investors apart from jewellery, as a hedge against inflation and market uncertainties. This search for a safe haven is also reflected in paper-form gold like ETFs and Sovereign Gold Bonds. Such investments give an option to put your money in gold, without physically holding the precious metal.

What are Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)?

SGBs are government-backed securities linked to the price of gold, which is an alternative to buying physical gold. Investors pay for the bonds in cash and receive the value in cash when the bonds mature. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issues SGBs on behalf of the Government of India.

Step-by-Step Guide to Check SGB Status

1. Through RBI/Bank

If you bought SGBs through a bank, post office, or SHCIL, you can check your bond details through their official portals or by visiting the branch. Banks typically provide a holding certificate after allotment, which contains the bond series, issue date, and maturity. You can also verify your investment through the RBI’s Sovereign Gold Bond section by providing your investor ID or application number.

2. Through a Demat Account (NSDL/CDSL)

For SGBs held in electronic form, log in to your demat account linked with NSDL or CDSL. Your SGB holdings will appear under the “Government Securities” or “Bonds” section, along with the quantity, ISIN, issue price, and maturity date. You can also download a detailed holding statement directly from the depository’s website or through your depository participant (DP).

3. Through Broker Accounts

If you purchased SGBs via online trading platforms like 5paisa, log in to your broker account and check under the “Holdings” or “Bonds”. Brokers generally update SGB allotments after RBI confirmation, and investors can view real-time valuation and redemption timelines.

Conclusion

The future of the SGB scheme remains uncertain, as the government is reportedly planning to discontinue further issuances. RBI has not yet announced any new SGB tranches for the financial year 2024–25. As a result, there are currently no active or upcoming SGB issues. The most recent issuance was the Sovereign Gold Bond 2023–24, the final tranche under the previous fiscal year.

However, RBI has released the schedule for premature redemption of SGB tranches falling between October 2025 and March 2026. Investors holding eligible bonds can choose to redeem them before maturity by submitting their redemption requests within the designated period specified by the RBI.
