One of his advice to domestic investors is to perceive short-term corrections as opportunities to add to long-term growth stories.

Jinesh Gopani is the Head of Equity at Axis Asset Management Company (AMC). He has experience of over 2 decades in the capital markets. Looking at his academic qualification, Gopani earned his Master’s degree in Finance from the University of Mumbai and has been actively managing money since 2007.

Journey towards the top

Gopani started working with Axis AMC in 2009 as an Equity Fund Manager. Gradually, he climbed up the ladder and became the Head of Equity in 2016. In this position, he currently manages the flagship Axis Long Term Equity Fund amongst other funds.

Before joining Axis AMC, he was associated with Birla Sunlife AMC as Portfolio Manager from June 2008 to October 2009. In this position, he was responsible for alternative assets across growth, value and dividend baskets.

He was also associated with Voyager India Capital as a senior research analyst from February 2006 to May 2008. Here he was responsible for BFSI and Infrastructure sector and held a sectorial portfolio manager role for investments.

The lessons learnt on the way up

As per an interview with value research, the fund manager learnt three lessons during his 2 decades of experience in the markets.

  1. Markets are better than any individual investor. Therefore, one should always respect the market.

  1. Learn from your mistakes, move on and not repeat them.

  1. Conviction and backing the right management- These are the two golden attributes that help to find the right pick.

Investment strategy

In an interview with CNBCTV18, Jinesh Gopani advised investors to stay away from high beta (stocks) and focus on stock selection.

Another piece of advice given by Gopani that can be imbibed by investors, especially in today’s markets, is that domestic investors should perceive short-term corrections as opportunities to add to long-term growth stories.
