January 2022 has been quite a volatile month for the equity market. Nifty 50 made large swings in the month and traded between 17100 and 18350.

January 2022 saw an increase in volatility in the equity market and Nifty VIX touched 23 and even Nifty 50 saw wide gyrations. Despite such volatility, SIP inflows remained robust and were above Rs 11,000 crore. During the said month, the domestic mutual fund industry saw redemption worth Rs 18,346.45 crore from equity dedicated mutual funds compared to Rs 17,722.45 crore that we saw in the month of December 2021.

Analysis of the data shows that fund managers are lightening their position from the energy sector and technology sector including some of the recently listed companies. Shares from the PSU basket from the energy sector were at the receiving end, as it was the most offloaded sector by mutual fund managers in January 2022. Out of the top ten stocks where MFs are net sellers, two are from the energy sector.

There is no clear trend among mid-cap stocks. Mutual fund managers sold shares from different sectors and there was no trend as such in their selling style. Nevertheless, there were two companies from the technology sector.

Even in small-cap stocks there was selling from diversified sectors and we could not see any selling pattern of mutual fund managers, also we don't see any direct correlation between mutual fund managers selling the stock and their returns. For example, Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals remained one of the best performers in small cap stocks despite MF remaining net seller in the stock.
