Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) and Meta Platforms have partnered to establish a 168 MW data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with the facility expected to be operational within two years. Under the arrangement, Reliance will build the infrastructure while Meta will lease capacity to support its global computing and artificial intelligence requirements.
The companies said the project represents Meta’s first customised data centre capacity in India. The facility will be designed to support large-scale AI workloads and digital services while offering room for future expansion.
According to the joint statement, the data centre will run on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater for cooling operations.
Meta Expands Long-Term Presence in India
The project adds another chapter to the relationship between Meta and Reliance. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, becoming one of the largest foreign investors in India’s digital ecosystem.
The new facility will form part of Meta’s global infrastructure network and support the company’s growing demand for AI computing capacity. The companies stated that the project highlights India’s increasing role in the worldwide digital and artificial intelligence value chain.
Reliance will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of the facility, including design, construction, utility management, renewable power supply, connectivity services and ongoing operations.
Renewable Energy Component Included
Alongside the data centre initiative, Meta is also collaborating with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy to support nearly 1 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity in India.
The companies said the strategic location of Jamnagar offers several operational advantages, including access to renewable energy resources, water availability, proximity to submarine cable landing stations on India’s western coast and connectivity through Jio’s fibre network.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, said in the joint statement that the partnership reflects India’s readiness to play a larger role in the global AI ecosystem. He added that Jamnagar is expected to emerge as a major destination for hyperscale AI computing infrastructure.
The development comes as technology companies worldwide continue to invest heavily in data centres to meet rising demand from artificial intelligence applications. With the Jamnagar project, Reliance strengthens its presence in digital infrastructure while Meta secures dedicated computing capacity from one of India’s largest industrial groups.
