The weakness reflected growing concerns over elevated valuations in artificial intelligence-linked companies, while investors also awaited interest rate decisions from major central banks and earnings from leading technology firms.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell as much as 3.5% during the session, taking its decline to more than 10% from its June 22 peak. A fall of 10% or more from a recent high is generally considered a technical correction in financial markets.
Semiconductor Stocks Lead Market Decline
Technology shares remained at the centre of the selloff across the region. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recorded sharp declines, dragging the Kospi Index down by more than 10% during intraday trading.
The weakness followed another round of selling in global semiconductor stocks as investors reassessed the outlook for companies linked to artificial intelligence. Concerns over crowded positioning and stretched valuations weighed on market sentiment, leading to broad-based declines across chipmakers.
AI Spending Concerns Weigh On Sentiment
Investor caution increased after reports that Nvidia Corp. is pursuing a new wave of artificial intelligence-related agreements valued at more than $750 billion. The planned investments added to concerns among some market participants that the rapid pace of AI spending could be pushing valuations beyond underlying business fundamentals.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Vey-Sern Ling, Managing Director at Union Bancaire Privee, said investor sentiment toward AI-related semiconductor stocks had shifted noticeably. He said market participants were reacting negatively to developments surrounding the sector, resulting in increased selling pressure.
Focus Shifts To Central Bank Decisions
Beyond the technology sector, investors are preparing for several major policy announcements scheduled this week. Among those making the news is the decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and Bank of England on their latest monetary policy moves that may affect global market sentiments.
Also of interest will be the quarterly earnings of some of the large technology firms with results expected to shed more light on demand and business performance in the industry.
Regional Markets Remain Under Pressure
Most equity markets in the Asia region were lower as the sell-off in semiconductors continued to spread across the region. The steep fall in tech stocks overshadowed the rise witnessed in other segments of the market.
The recent market activity indicates the increasing significance of shifting investor sentiment on AI-linked stocks. Considering there are several central bank meetings and company earnings to be released in the upcoming days, market players would look at the upcoming events that may affect equity markets and tech stocks in particular.
