Global Oil Prices Rise
Global crude oil prices increased following geopolitical developments in the Gulf region. Brent crude for June delivery rose 6.1% to $95.89 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for May delivery gained 7.5% to $90.12 per barrel, according to Reuters.
The increase followed tensions linked to maritime activity in the Gulf of Oman and developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supply.
LPG Prices And Policy Measures
Commercial LPG prices were increased by ₹195.50 per 19-kg cylinder on April 1, taking the price in Delhi to ₹2,078.50, according to state-owned oil companies. Domestic LPG prices remain unchanged at ₹913 per 14.2-kg cylinder after a ₹60 increase on March 7, as per PTI.
A report by Macquarie Group noted that at crude prices between $135 and $165 per barrel, oil marketing companies may incur losses of ₹18 per litre on petrol and ₹35 per litre on diesel. The report also stated that every $10 per barrel increase in crude prices can raise losses by about ₹6 per litre.
Factors Influencing Fuel Prices
The fuel prices in India are dependent on the crude oil prices on an international scale, the fluctuating currency exchange rates between the Indian rupee and the United States dollar, and taxes levied by both the federal government and the states.
There have been no changes in the fuel prices despite the volatility in the international crude oil markets and the unfolding geopolitical events.
