सारांश:

The Indian rupee opened slightly stronger against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, recovering 4 paise from the previous close, although elevated crude oil prices and sustained dollar demand continued to keep the domestic currency under pressure.

The Indian rupee opened at 96.41 against the U.S. dollar on July 21, strengthening by 4 paise from its previous close of 96.45. The modest gain came even as higher crude oil prices and continued demand for the greenback from oil marketing companies remained key factors influencing the currency market.

The rupee has stayed close to its record low in recent sessions as rising energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty have weighed on market sentiment. Traders are also closely tracking the Reserve Bank of India’s actions in the foreign exchange market.

RBI Intervention Remains In Focus

According to Finrex, the rupee is expected to trade around the 96.50 level against the U.S. dollar, remaining close to its record low of 96.97. The firm said sustained dollar purchases by oil marketing companies continue to pressure the domestic currency.

Finrex also noted that the RBI has reportedly been selling dollars at higher levels to reduce volatility in the rupee and support foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposit inflows. It advised exporters to consider selling dollars near intraday highs, while importers may use temporary declines in the currency pair to hedge near-term payment obligations.

Asian currencies showed mixed performance against the U.S. dollar during early trade. The Malaysian ringgit led regional gains with a rise of 0.108%, followed by the Chinese renminbi, which advanced 0.087%.

The Singapore dollar edged up 0.023%, while the Philippine peso was largely unchanged with a marginal gain of 0.006%. The Japanese yen traded flat against the dollar.

Among the weaker currencies, the South Korean won declined 0.264%, the Indonesian rupiah fell 0.15%, the Taiwan dollar slipped 0.081%, and the Thai baht eased 0.056%.

Dollar Holds Near One-Week High

The U.S. dollar remained close to a one-week high as investors monitored developments in the Middle East. The continuing tensions caused worries about energy supplies across the world, although rumors of a possible ceasefire helped sentiment in the markets.

The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the currency against a basket of six major peers, was steady at 100.96, close to its highest level since July 15.

Against the Japanese yen, the dollar was largely unchanged at 162.50. The euro traded near $1.1415, while the British pound held around $1.3434 after Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed the government’s commitment to existing fiscal rules.

Market participants are expected to continue monitoring movements in crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and RBI intervention for further direction in the rupee during the trading session.
