Trump Says He Has ‘Absolute Right’ To Impose Tariffs Despite U.S. Supreme Court Ruling

Donald Trump, President of the United States, said he has the “absolute right” to impose tariffs in alternative forms despite a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that struck down his global tariff measures.

In a statement posted on the social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said he had already started imposing tariffs through other mechanisms after the court decision.

“I have the absolute right to charge tariffs in another form, and have already started to do so,” Trump wrote in his post.

According to Reuters, Trump had earlier imposed a 10% tariff on U.S. imports through an executive order shortly after the Supreme Court ruling.

Tariff Policy Dispute With The Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruling last month invalidated Trump’s global tariff policy, prompting the administration to explore alternative legal routes to maintain import duties.

Tariffs are taxes imposed on imported goods and are commonly used as a tool in trade policy. The administration had earlier implemented tariffs on imports from several countries as part of its broader trade strategy.

Despite the ruling, Trump stated that he believes the presidency retains the authority to impose tariffs under other legal provisions.

Comments On Federal Reserve Dispute

In a separate post on Sunday, Trump criticized James Boasberg, a federal judge, for quashing subpoenas issued in an investigation into Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Federal Reserve.

The subpoenas were linked to a probe into costs associated with renovations of the Federal Reserve’s headquarters building.

Trump said the judge’s decision had “little to do with the law” and described it as politically motivated in his social media post.

Ongoing Criticism Of Federal Reserve Leadership

Trump has repeatedly criticized Jerome Powell and the Federal Reserve over its interest rate policies. The president has called for lower interest rates in several public statements and social media posts.

He has also questioned the role of Lisa Cook, a governor of the Federal Reserve, and attempted to remove her from the central bank’s leadership over allegations of mortgage fraud.

In January, the U.S. Supreme Court expressed skepticism about the administration’s attempt to dismiss Cook. According to Reuters, several justices questioned whether the administration had provided sufficient legal grounds to justify her removal.
