The Nifty 50 remained under pressure during Monday's trading session on October 19, with sharp intraday movements marking the weekly options expiry. Within the opening hour, the benchmark index moved through a range of nearly 205 points, touching a high of 23,175.25 and a low of 22,970.50.
By 10:50 AM, Nifty was trading at 23,056, down 89 points or 0.39%. Volatility also increased, with India VIX rising 3.20% to 14.5, reflecting higher expectations of market fluctuations.
The weekly Nifty expiry has been brought forward to Monday from its usual Tuesday schedule because of the Dussehra market holiday on October 20. The change in the expiry schedule, coupled with substantial options positioning near the current market price, has kept trading activity concentrated around the 23,000–23,200 range.
Nifty Options Chain Shows Higher Addition in Call Positions
The latest available derivatives data presents a mixed picture, with put open interest remaining higher in absolute terms while fresh additions are comparatively stronger on the call side.
The पुट-कॉल रेशियो (PCR) stands at 1.07, suggesting broadly balanced positioning with a slight tilt towards put open interest. The maximum pain level is placed at 23,100, which also serves as an important reference for the day's trading.
According to the options data recorded, total call open interest stood at 28.12 crore contracts, while total put open interest was higher at 30.78 crore contracts.
The difference becomes more noticeable when examining the change in open interest. Call OI increased by 10.22 crore contracts during the observed period, compared with an addition of 7.21 crore contracts in puts.
This higher build-up on the call side indicates increased activity at overhead strikes. If these additions largely represent fresh call writing, they could restrict recovery attempts, particularly near levels where call positions are heavily concentrated.
At the same time, the higher aggregate put open interest suggests that downside strikes continue to attract substantial participation. The movement in Nifty will therefore depend on how these positions change as expiry approaches.
Why the 23,150–23,200 Zone Matters for Nifty
The call options chain shows notable additions across strikes between 23,050 and 23,550. Among these, 23,200 has witnessed the largest increase in open interest, followed by 23,150.
Looking at total outstanding positions, 23,200 also carries the highest call open interest, followed by 23,500. This makes the 23,200 strike an important resistance reference for the ongoing session.
For any meaningful recovery, Nifty would first need to move above 23,100 and sustain that level. Such a move could bring 23,150 into focus, followed by the morning high of 23,175.25.
Beyond these levels, 23,200 remains the stronger barrier. With both fresh additions and total call concentration elevated at this strike, the index may face difficulty moving higher unless call positions begin to unwind.
A sustained break above 23,200, supported by call unwinding, could lead to short covering and extend the recovery. Until that happens, the 23,150–23,200 region is likely to attract close attention from short-term traders.
Although 23,500 has the second-highest concentration of call open interest, it remains some distance from the current market price and has limited immediate relevance unless the index records a substantial upward move.
Put Writers Concentrate Positions Around 23,000
On the put side, the 23,000 strike has recorded the highest addition in open interest, followed by 23,050. Total put open interest is also concentrated most heavily at 23,000, with the next significant accumulation seen at 22,900.
This places the 23,000 mark at the centre of the downside setup.
The significance of this level was already evident during early trading when Nifty slipped to 22,970.50 before recovering above 23,000. However, the subsequent weakness has kept the index close to this support.
If the index continues to hold above 23,000 and put writing remains intact, the level could provide support during further declines.
On the other hand, renewed selling below 23,000 would raise the possibility of another test of the session's low near 22,970. If the index breaks this level and put positions begin to unwind, the next significant support based on options concentration lies at 22,900.
Given the proximity of Nifty to the 23,000 strike, movements around this level could have a considerable influence on intraday sentiment.
Nifty Weekly Expiry: Important Support and Resistance Levels
The combination of intraday price action and open interest distribution highlights the following levels for the remaining trading session.
| निफ्टी लेवल | Market Significance |
|---|---|
| 23,200 | Major resistance backed by highest call OI |
| 23,150–23,175 | Near-term resistance zone and intraday high |
| 23,100 | Maximum pain level and immediate upside reference |
| 23,050 | First downside reference based on put OI addition |
| 23,000 | Major support with the highest put OI |
| 22,970 | Morning session low |
| 22,900 | Next significant put-based support |
Nifty Weekly Expiry Day Outlook: Can Nifty Recover Above 23,100?
The market's immediate direction appears closely tied to the 23,000–23,100 region. While 23,000 has substantial put open interest supporting it, the concentration of call positions above the current market price indicates that any recovery may face resistance.
The comparatively stronger addition in call open interest also suggests that sellers may retain an advantage unless Nifty begins to reclaim the nearby resistance levels.
India VIX at 14.5 adds another consideration. With volatility rising on expiry day, sharp intraday reversals cannot be ruled out, especially if large option positions are unwound as the session progresses.
On the upside, 23,100 is the first level Nifty needs to recover. Sustained trading above this mark could improve the near-term outlook and encourage a move towards 23,150–23,175. A further break above 23,200, along with evidence of call unwinding, would strengthen the recovery.
On the downside, the 23,000 level remains the main area to monitor. A sustained breach could bring the intraday low of 22,970 back into focus. If selling pressure continues below that level, the index could extend its decline towards 22,900.
For the time being, the options structure points towards a range-bound session with a mild negative bias. Higher call OI additions and the inability of Nifty to retain its early gains favour a cautious approach to recoveries.
The 23,000–23,200 band remains the broader reference range for the expiry session, although a break on either side could change the prevailing setup. Changes in open interest, particularly at the 23,000 put and 23,200 call strikes, will be important in assessing whether the current trading range is likely to hold.
