A systematic Investment Plan is a method of investing a fixed amount into a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals. Your bank auto-debits the amount on a chosen date, and units are allotted at that day's Net Asset Value (NAV). You can start with as little as ₹100 or ₹500, and there is no upper limit.
The appeal of SIP comes from three main factors working behind the scenes.
First, rupee-cost averaging ensures you buy more units when markets fall and fewer when they rise. This evens out your average cost over time.
Second, the auto-debit system removes the constant urge to time the market. This actually turns investing into a habit instead of a choice.
Third, the benefits of compounding grow with consistency. A monthly SIP of ₹10,000 at an expected 12% per year can reach about ₹23.2 lakh in 10 years, based on a total investment of just ₹12 lakh.
A lumpsum investment is a one-time deployment of a large amount into a mutual fund scheme. It's the natural choice when you receive a windfall. An annual bonus, PF withdrawal, ESOP payout, inheritance or property sale proceeds.
The strongest argument for lumpsum is that your entire corpus starts compounding from day one, giving it a capital-efficiency edge over a slowly-built SIP.
A ₹1 lakh lumpsum at 12% p.a. grows to about ₹3.1 lakh in a decade, tracking closely with the long-term CAGR of a large-cap fund. Lumpsum also tends to outperform decisively when markets are clearly undervalued or entering a fresh bull cycle. The trade-off, however, is the entry-timing risk it carries: invest at a market peak and your corpus can take three to five years just to break even.

Which Actually Performs Better?
Back-tested data on rolling five-year Nifty 50 periods throws up a counter-intuitive result. Lumpsum beats SIP in roughly 55–60% of periods, while SIP wins the remaining 40–45%.
However, lumpsum's edge is heavily concentrated in early-bull-market entries, where the corpus rides an unbroken uptrend. The moment you enter at elevated valuations or just before a correction, SIP takes over decisively. Rupee-cost averaging keeps buying more units as prices fall.
Over horizons longer than 15 years, the gap between the two narrows sharply and both strategies end up delivering broadly similar CAGRs.
There's also a behavioural footnote worth taking seriously. The mathematical edge may lean toward lumpsum, but most investors who deploy a lumpsum at a peak panic-exit during the drawdown that follows, permanently forfeiting the very advantage the strategy offered. In other words, the "better" strategy on paper is often the "worse" strategy in practice for anyone who hasn't lived through a full market cycle.
The tax treatment is identical for both strategies at redemption. Equity funds attract Long Term Capital Gains tax at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year, provided units are held for more than a year; short-term gains are taxed at 20%. Debt funds are taxed at your slab rate, regardless of how long you hold them. ELSS retains its Section 80C benefit up to ₹1.5 lakh with a three-year lock-in. SIP investors should remember that each monthly instalment counts as a separate purchase for calculating the holding period. This is important when you begin to redeem.
